Elder Abuse

EDMONTON, AB (June 15, 2012): Today, Wildrose Seniors Critic Kerry Towle released the following statement recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day:

“Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity to recognize the terrible abusive situations seniors in our communities face every single day. This abuse can take several different forms, including physical, financial, sexual and emotional.  No single form of elder abuse should be tolerated, and I encourage all Albertans to become familiar with the signs of elder abuse and what they can do to prevent it.

“But today is not just a day for awareness. It’s a day for action. It’s a day to take stock of what the Alberta government can do immediately to help improve the quality of life of seniors in full time care. In that regard, serving fresh, nutritious meals every day is critical to ensuring good health for our aging seniors, but this is not happening in 71 long-term care nursing facilities in Alberta.

"In these facilities, where prepackaged meals are being served, by the time the food hits the plate, it is often inedible to the point that seniors can’t bring themselves to eat it. This practice must end. I call on the Alberta government to immediately stop trucking in heat-and-serve dishes and restore healthy, local food preparation at long-term care facilities wherever it is feasible.

“I also want to take this opportunity to say the Wildrose Official Opposition will always stand up for Alberta’s seniors and fight for the issues that matter to them. If you have an issue you’d like to raise, please do not hesitate to call my office at 403.227.1500 or email me at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. "I am appalled and disgusted by this situation that is affecting so many of the fine people who built this wonderful province for us to live in," said Livingstone Macleod MLA Pat Stier. Mr.Stier has been engaged in meetings regarding funding and improved care for the senior centres in the constituency.
